FAMILY AND charities have far greater influence in shaping Irish people’s personal values than does the church, a recent survey has found. It found that the Government has least influence in the shaping of such values.

The community and school were also found to be very influential, while the influence of the workplace, television and the internet was comparatively low.

The survey of 1,000 people in the Republic aged over 16 was conducted by NFP Synergy between July 28th and September 7th last on behalf the Wheel, a body representing 855 community and voluntary organisations in Ireland.

People were asked to what extent eight institutions had contributed to shaping their values. Most influential was the family at 75 per cent, followed by charities at 62 per cent and school at 54 per cent. TV was found to be influential by 40 per cent, the workplace by 38 per cent, the church by 38 per cent, the internet by 18 per cent and the Government by 8 per cent.
