The Revenue Commissioners yielded over €120 million in tax, interest and penalties from its audit and investigation programmes in the second three months of 2010.
The Government publication Iris Oifigiúil today published the names of 83 tax defaulters who have made total settlements of over €17 million.
Among the published cases were 36 settlements for amounts exceeding €100,000; of which seven exceeded €500,000. Three of that seven exceeded €1 million.
One of the seven include Dublin food and restaurant business, Fallon & Byrne, which made a settlement of €733,719 in relation to under declaration of VAT. The amount involved was €362,474 while the interest and penalties was €371,245.
The business was set up a number of years ago by building contractor Paul Byrne and his partner, former journalist Fiona McHugh. Mr Byrne also appears under the heading of Paul and Peter Byrne, building contractors, Walshestown, Newbridge, Co Kildare. Paul Byrne and his father made a settlement of €644,058 arising from a Revenue audit. The taxes involved were VAT, PAYE and PRSI and the interest and penalties involved were €244,058. Attempts to contact Mr Byrne and Ms McHugh met with no response.
The highest settlement on the list was for €1.67 million and arose out of a Revenue audit. Wordperfect Translations Ltd, of Fortlawn Park, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15 made the settlement arising from the under declaration of VAT and PAYE/PRSI. Slightly more than half of the payment arose from interest and penalties.
Josephine Meow Yoong Kam, a restaurateur of O’Connell Street, Waterford, made a €1.47 million settlement arising from unpaid income tax and VAT.
A solicitor and real estate investor, Robert C Walsh, of Balnagowan House, Dartry, Dublin 6, made a settlement of €1.36 million arising from the under declaration of income tax, capital gains tax and VAT. Of the amount, €852,663 arose from interest and penalties.
Sherland Entertainments Ltd, trading as Café Bar Deli, the group of restaurants associated with businessman Jay Bourke, was fined €632 for failing to have a current liquor licence, while Mercroft Taverns Ltd, trading as the Market Bar, Fade Street, Dublin, was fined the same amount for the same reason. Mr Bourke, Eoin Foyle and John Reynolds are the directors of Mercroft. Mr Reynolds is the operator of the Electric Picnic.
