The State has been given extra time to complete a book of evidence in the case of a retired consultant surgeon who denies indecently assaulting 16 young males over 26 years.
Dr Michael Shine (80), Wellington Road, Dublin, is charged with 25 counts of indecent assault between 1964 until 1990, in Co Louth and at a clinic in the county. He has pleaded not guilty.
Dr Shine appeared at Dublin District Court yesterday but Judge Cormac Dunne was told that the book of evidence was not yet ready to be served.
A State solicitor said it was a large case and, with “eight volumes of files, 16 injured parties are referred to in the book of evidence”. The State solicitor asked for more time and said it was expected that the book would be completed in four weeks.
Judge Dunne allowed the extension and ordered Dr Shine to appear again on October 31st.
