THE phenomenon of the missing signposts continues in the south-east, and presumably in other regions. Waterford County Council heard this week that up to 70 signposts have disappeared, and real difficulties are being caused at some strategic crossroads for visitors unsure of their routes.
It is suspected that the signposts are being exported for sale to establishments such as Irish bars in various parts of the world as decorative artefacts. In Waterford, placenames such as Dunhill and Cheekpoint appear to be popular targets for the thieves.
The council heard a number of suggestions for preventative measures, such as welding the signs to the posts, and one official suggested, half-seriously, that the council should itself consider going into the business of selling the signs.
