At least six people were injured Friday when a powerful explosion rocked the heart of Indian
Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar, police said.
The impact of the blast was felt up to two kilometers away, police and witnesses said.
"We are trying to ascertain the details," a police spokesman said. Hospital officials said at least six people were admitted.
The explosion happened despite heightened security in the wake of Tuesday's attack by militants on a passenger bus and an army base in Jammu, the winter capital, that left 35 people, mostly women and children, dead.
Following the blast, traffic was suspended on roads near the multi-storey civil secretariat, which houses the Srinagar offices of the state's Chief Minister Mr Farooq Abdullah and his cabinet colleagues.
Over 35,000 people have been killed in Kashmir since 1989 when Muslim rebels began a bloody rebellion against Indian rule.
