Madrid - An explosion yesterday damaged the basilica at the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), north-west of Madrid, where the dictator Franco is buried, a government spokesman said.
There were no victims in the explosion, which damaged a confessional and pews in the basilica. The device had been planted near the tombs of Franco and the founder of the extreme right-wing Falangist party, Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera.
The spokesman said an anonymous caller from the GRAPO extreme left-wing group, told the Madrid newspaper El Pais that it planned to attack the monument.
