the University of Limerick yesterday conferred honorary doctorates on four people who have distinguished themselves in various areas of Irish life.
A degree of Doctor of letters was conferred on Ciaran Mac Mathuna for his service to broadcasting and Irish traditional music. Mr T.J. Maher, former president of the IFA and the Irish Co-Operative Organisation Society, who retired from the European Parliament in 1994, received a Doctorate in Economic Science.
Ms Sylvia Meehan, former chairwoman of the Employment Equality Agency, was awarded a degree of Doctor of Laws, and John A Ruddock, former headmaster of Villiers School, Limerick, and for 30 years chairman and founder of the Limerick Music Association, a degree of Doctor of Letters.
