An innovative and inspiring chief executive is sought to promote sensible drinking in Ireland.

It may seem a tall order, but the drinks industry is taking seriously the problem of alcohol abuse and is uniting to create a company which will promote a responsible approach to the consumption of alcohol.

Manage the Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society, or MEAS - the Irish language word for ‘respect’ - has been in its planning stage for the past six months and is now ready to be headed up by a chief executive.

The role requires someone with the skills to develop and implement programmes aimed at encouraging social responsibility among drinkers; and co-operating with other organisations in educating people about alcohol abuse.

It will act as an advocate for a "balanced approach" to regulation and personal responsibility in relation alcohol consumption.

The press statement issued on behalf of the industry says the chief executive must have "record of achievements in confronting complex issues of scale in the public domain" and "have excellent communications and influencing skills".
