Euro reaches new high as dollar falls

The US dollar resumed its downward spiral today to reach a record low against the euro.

The US dollar resumed its downward spiral today to reach a record low against the euro.

The euro reached a record high against the dollar of $1.3093 per euro, up 0.3 per cent from late New York levels and reversing earlier gains made by the dollar.

News Russia's central bank may review the share of euros it holds in its currency reserves renewed speculation it might buy more euros and helped lift the single currency against the greenback, some analysts said.

The Russian news added to negative dollar sentiment already fueled by market belief the United States is comfortable with a weaker currency to reduce its current account deficit.

The dollar was at 103.05 yen , down 0.16 per cent from New York closing levels and within sight of the 4-1/2 year low of near 102.75 hit against the yen last week.

Weakness against the yen was less pronounced due to market wariness about possible dollar-buying intervention from Asia central banks.
