Police fired volleys of teargas in Greece's second largest city today to disperse about 200 self-styled anarchists who smashed shop windows and set a McDonald's restaurant ablaze.

Witnesses said the anarchists were part of about 25,000 anti-capitalist protesters who marched through Thessaloniki's city centre about 80 kilometres west of where a European Union summit ended earlier in the day.

"They threw Molotov cocktails into the McDonald's and planted anarchist black flags on the footpath outside," correspondent Phillip Pangalos said.

"Others attacked nearby shops with axes and sticks."
