Addis Ababa - Ethiopian troops, backed by helicopter gunships, launched a fresh wave of attacks yesterday against Eritrean positions, according to Eritrean officials in Asmara.
Foreign governments urged their nationals to quit the warring states in the Horn of Africa, but flights were still operating. In Djibouti, ministers representing the regional Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) met to discuss a diplomatic resolution.
Asmara said that the Ethiopian troops went on the offensive on the western Badme front, where both sides reported heavy fighting on Saturday, and both claimed victory.
