Demonstrations were held outside 310 Esso petrol stations in Ireland and Britain today to protest against environmental policies, demonstration organisers said.

The protestors from a number of environmental groups handed out leaflets, calling on drivers to boycott Esso.

Among them was the founder of the Body Shop cosmetics chain, Ms Anita Roddick.

A spokesman for the StopEsso coalition, which claimed 2,000 people took part in the day of action said "Many thousands of people are outraged by Esso's sabotage of international action to tackle global warming.

"The hundreds of events taking place across the country show the extent of the oppostion to Esso."

Esso, and its parent company Exxon Mobil are accused of being one of the main forces behind US President Mr George W. Bush's decision not to accept the Kyoto accords, limiting the production of greenhouse gases.

The company has issued a statement saying: "We strongly refute the allegations they make and deplore their attempts to smear our name in this way."

"Climate change, referred to by many as global warming, is an important global issue that we take very seriously."
