The Environmental Protection Agency is to begin flaring landfill gas at the abandoned dump at Kerdiffstown, Co Kildare, in an effort to reduce noxious odours.
In its latest report on progress in remediating the site, it said works were ongoing to install 24 wells and pipes that would feed landfill gas flares. It expects the flares will be operational by the end of this month.
Although the planned works “will help reduce some of the odour”, it said odour “may continue to be encountered until full remediation is completed and in particular during any work phases where wastes will be disturbed”.
The EPA has established an information website – kerdiffstowncleanup.ie – and said it would continue to issue community update reports. Its objective is to clean up and remediate the Kerdiffstown landfill site and to set in place “aftercare” measures.
