Tomorrow is Potato Day. No kidding. Head to Sonairte in Laytown, Co Meath, to find a fantastic array of tubers and well-timed demonstrations on how best to grow and cook them. Dave Langford of Co Mayo and Dermot Carey, who worked on the gardens at Lissadell House, will demonstrate the “lazybed” planting technique and they will also show that it is possible to grow spuds on a patio or balcony.
The Mustard Seed Cafe will serve a variety of potato dishes, and children can indulge in potato printmaking and other diversions. And there will be potatoes to buy, of course – more than 50 varieties with white, gold, blue, purple and black skins and white, yellow, blue and red flesh. Admission is €3 for adults; children free. More details from sonairte.ie. Gates open from noon-5pm.
