About 500 mourners attended the removal yesterday evening of the remains of Damien Mon ahan, who was murdered in Holland a fortnight ago, to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Ennis, Co Clare.

Father Tom Monahan, an uncle of the murder victim, who led the prayers, said that the community of Cloughleigh had been shocked and deeply saddened at the circumstances surrounding his nephew's death.

The chief mourners were Mr Monahan's mother, Nora, and his six sisters and three brothers.

The mourners were told that Damien was being welcomed back to the community where he had worshipped as a child. The funeral Mass takes place at 2 p.m. today, followed by burial at Drumcliff Cemetery.
