A man arrested in a Dublin bank with allegedly forged or stolen cheques for more than €100,000 has been remanded in custody over Christmas after gardaí objected to bail.

Mr Thomas Warren (62), Oak Road, Woolston, Southampton, England, was arrested at the Bank of Ireland, College Green, on Monday when he attempted to open an account with cheques worth €53,643 and €52,285.

The first cheque was allegedly stolen and the second allegedly altered by the accused.

Gardaí told Dublin District Court today that he had no ties with this jurisdiction and there was a strong possibility of further charges. There were "strenuous objections" to bail as a result.

Mr Warren, who interrupted gardaí saying he was simply "giving" the cheques to the bank, later apologised after the case was put back for him to talk to his solicitor.

His solicitor said there was no application for bail and Judge William Hamill remanded him in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.
