The Casa aircraft had been on maritime patrol off the southwest coast with six personnel on board when smoke was detected in the cabin.

The aircraft diverted to Farranfore, where it landed without incident at 10.55am.

The Defence Forces press office said all six crew were safe and well. A technical team was yesterday preparing to deploy from Baldonnel to conduct a technical examination of the aircraft, a spokesman said.

Kerry airport said the Kerry air-traffic control received a call at 10.25am from the Shannon air-traffic control centre regarding the aircraft, which was operating 90 miles west off the coast.

The aircraft reported a smell of smoke in the cockpit and requested clearance to reroute to Kerry Airport to make a precautionary landing. While en route, the crew declared a mayday emergency and continued to Kerry, according to the airport statement.

All emergency services were waiting. The aircraft was boarded by the airport and county fire officers after it was declared safe. The emergency alert was stood down at 11.05am.

The Coast Guard helicopter was also dispatched from Shannon.
