Among those who will welcome Bishop Murphy-Connor's elevation to the See of Westminster is Bishop Eamonn Casey. When Casey returned from his Peruvian exile, the Irish hierarchy wanted nothing to do with him. The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Connell, in particular felt his presence in Ireland would cause unending media re-visiting of the Annie Murphy affair. The late Cardinal Basil Hume did not wish to have him in the archdiocese of Westminster. It was Murphy-O'Connor who found a home for Casey in his diocese of Arundel, in Sussex, where he still discreetly resides.
