The Competition Authority is to refer eircom to the telecoms' regulator after a rival complained about one of its marketing campaigns.

IFA Telecom raised concerns about eircom's campaign to win back customers it had lost to Carrier Pre-selection (CPS) operators.

With CPS, customers can select an alternative service provider in advance to carry their calls but eircom continues to provide the telephone lines and billing services.

On January 27th, the telecoms regulator, Comreg announced that eircom had breached the code of practice whereby its field sales personnel misled customers when making a comparison between eircom's and a CPS competitor's rate.

Comreg asserted then that eircom had rectified the alleged breach and undertook undertook at that time to carry out investigations into other alleged breaches.

The Competition Authority said it was referring the matter back to Comreg to avoid the duplicating activities and because the complaint fell more comfortably within Comreg's remit.
