A MAN charged with violent disorder in Limerick has been refused bail in the local District Court.

Christopher McCormack (27), McNamara Terrace, Wolfe Tone Street, Limerick, was one of eight people arrested as part of a major Garda operation in Limerick last month. The seven other men are charged with a variety of offences, including threatening to kill a man and alleged extortion.

Mr McCormack and his younger brother, David McCormack (25), Crecora Avenue, Weston, Limerick, are both charged with committing violent disorder at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, on February 17th, 2010.

David McCormack did not seek bail yesterday and was remanded in continuing custody until June 9th next. Defence solicitor John Devane applied for bail on behalf of Christopher McCormack.

Det Sgt Kevin Swan objected on behalf of the State because of the seriousness of the charge.

Judge Tom O’Donnell said he was satisfied there would be a risk to witnesses, and refused bail. He remanded the accused in custody until June 9th.

Six other people who appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday via video-link from Limerick prison were also remanded in continuing custody until the same date. Among those who appeared was Ger Dundon (24), Hyde Road, Limerick, who is charged with committing violent disorder at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, on February 17th, 2010.

A father and son who are charged with demanding money with menaces at John Carew Park on unspecified dates between January 29th, 2009 and February 27th, 2009 also appeared in court.

Gareth Keogh-Collins (27), Hyde Avenue, and his father James Collins (47), Crecora Avenue, are also charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Mark Heffernan on October 17th, 2009 and with demanding money with menaces.

Mr Keogh-Collins is also charged with committing violent disorder at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, on February 17th, 2010.

Christopher McCarthy (27), Crecora Avenue, Limerick, is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Mark Heffernan on October 17th, 2009 at the Milk Market, Limerick, and with demanding money with menaces on the same date.

Michael Bridgeman (51), Glenview, Ballyneety, Co Limerick, is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Mark Heffernan at John Carew Park, Limerick, on unspecified dates between January 29th, 2009 and February 12th, 2010. Patrick Pickford (19), Talbot Avenue, Prospect, Limerick, is charged with demanding money with menaces.
