Teaching starting to lose its pull

One career that has dominated the news in recent months is teaching. With its demise repeatedly forecast during the current pay dispute, many students are wary of considering it as an option. The latest HEA report says there is plenty of work in teaching after graduating with a Higher Diploma in Education (H-Dip), but it tends to be of a temporary nature. In 1999, over 62 per cent of those with a H-Dip got "part time, temporary or substitute" work in Ireland upon graduation. Only 5.1 per cent got a permanent post - and this was down on the previous year. The other notable trend is over one in 10 (11.1 per cent) Higher Diploma graduates never go into teaching at all. While this indicates dissatisfaction with prospects in the profession, the situation has improved recently. In 1998, more than 20 per cent of teaching graduates went into other sectors.
