Teachers' drugs conference

Over 100 teachers are expected to attend tomorrow's TUI conference on substance misuse in Dublin

Over 100 teachers are expected to attend tomorrow's TUI conference on substance misuse in Dublin. The response to the conference has been "phenomenal", says TUI organiser Billy Fitzpatrick. The day-long training conference will be opened by the Minister for Education and Science, Micheal Martin. Speakers at the conference include Garda Noel Clarke of the National Drugs Unit; Dr Mark Morgan, of St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, who will deliver new research findings and Ruby Morrow, psychologist with the Department of Education & Science, on the school role in prevention. Karen Dowling, a TCD law student, will speak about growing up in Dublin's inner city - she is a recovering drug addict who has been off drugs for 18 months.

The conference starts at the Shelbourne Hotel at 10.15 a.m. After lunch, the conference will split up into four workshops on policy development in individual schools; the needs for home/school/community links; signs and symptoms and legal and security issues
