Are there high-quality career opportunities that are recession proof? I am going to suggest three such opportunities today.
HAIR STYLIST
Talking to a hair stylist in David Marshall’s hair salon on Dawson Street, Dublin recently, I was surprised to learn that she was a university graduate who had chosen to study hairdressing following the completion of her third-level university degree programme. Her course involved an 18-months intensive training at the David Marshall School of Hairdressing (call 01–6770598 for details).
The stylist was extremely enthusiastic about her choice of career. She now has a skills set, which allowed her to travel and work throughout the world. Her course gave her the opportunity to develop and express her creative and artistic side. She is now working in a variety of settings, including the fashion industry, film and theatre as well as in the day-to-day salon work.
No matter how difficult the economic downturn, she cannot envisage a time when most women, and the occasional male, would forgo looking their best, for the price of a visit to the hairdressers.
FAST FOOD INDUSTRY
As people’s spending power decreases, the fast-food industry’s financial results keep strengthening. I have worked with the McDonald’s Corporation on their student employment programme for many years and present 16 scholarships annually to young part-time staff members towards their third-level education costs.
Due to this involvement with the management staff of McDonald’s throughout the country, I have come to realise that the fast-food industry provides a very attractive career path to energetic young people, offering almost unlimited travel options throughout their worldwide network of stores.
In times of recession this industry offers real opportunities. Details at www.mcdonalds.ie
