Teachers and guidance counsellors will want to note that the points awarded for the first time by the seven universities for results in Leaving Cert Vocational Programme link modules are different to those awarded by the ITs. The institutes award 30 points for a pass, 50 for a merit and 70 for a distinction, while the universities will, for the first time this year, award 30 points for a pass, 40 for a merit and 50 points for a distinction.

Students will now be able to use points allocation for the link modules as one of their six subjects for the purposes of calculating points for courses in ITs or universities. The Conference of Heads of Irish Universities (CHIU) says that the level of points it awards will be adjusted depending on developments such as the recommendations of the Commission on the Points System.
