CD for schools
A multimedia CD-ROM aimed at second-level students is now available from Dublin Corporation Public Libraries. Wordsmiths profiles 46 contemporary authors from Ireland, Denmark and Portugal. The 16 Irish writers included are Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney, Eavan Boland, Brendan Kennelly, William Trevor, Maeve Binchy, Patricia Scanlan, John Banville, John McGahern, Roddy Doyle, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Gabriel Rosenstock, Hugh Leonard, Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Tom McCaughren and Marita Conlon-McKenna.
The CD has been produced with partners from Denmark and Portugal within the framework of an EU-assisted project. Available to individuals, libraries and educational institutions, it costs £15 plus £1 postage from the EU Project Office, Dublin City Public Libraries, Cumberland House, Fenian Street, Dublin 2 - phone (01) 661 9000.
Winners all
For the fourth year, NUI Maynooth has presented prizes to the best maths and science students at second-level schools in the locality. This year students in 12 schools were singled for having achieved the best results in maths and science exams at the end of fifth year. A prize of £100 is donated to each school.

British courses
Second-level students thinking of studying in Britain or Northern Ireland will be interested to note that from next autumn, all those studying higher national certificate courses can apply for means-tested fees. At the moment only those studying for degrees or higher national diploma courses are eligible. Eligible students attending postgraduate certificate education courses will continue to have their fees paid.
Currently, 11 health profession courses are funded by Britain's National Health Service. However, from next autumn nursing degrees and diplomas will also be included on this list. The 11 exiting courses are occupational therapy; radiography; dental hygiene; chiropody; prosthetics; language therapy; physiotherapy; orthoptics; dental therapy; dietetics and orthotics.

Information day
An information day on PLCs in Dublin will be held next Tuesday between 9.30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the RDS, Dublin. CDVEC PLC Information Day is organised by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee.
