THE PROPOSED new Leaving Certificate English syllabus is to be discussed at the Irish Writers' Centre, Parnell Square, Dublin on Saturday, February 8th. The meeting will focus in particular on paper 1 of the syllabus. The meeting, which has been organised by the Association of Teachers of English, is to be addressed by Tom Mullins, lecturer in English education at UCC and education officer on the English Syllabus Committee.
Kate O'Carroll, chairwoman of the association, says they are still expecting the new syllabus to go ahead.
She says "there's a great deal of interest and a certain need" to discuss questions to do with time-tabling, in-service courses and approach.
There is a certain amount of "waiting and uncertainty" among English teachers, she explains.
The meeting starts at 2 p.m., with an admission fee of £3 for non-members. For further information, contact Kate O'Carroll (tel: (01) 671 1435).
