MY TY WEEK: Geoffrey Brennan (16), Coláiste Mhuire, Johnstown, Co Kilkenny:'I'm the bank manager in the AIB Build a Bank programme: students lodge their money so they have a good chance to save. It's a lot of work to advertise the service and set up a table every week.

“I’m also involved in a play based on the movie Footloose. I have a side part just off the main cast and we’re rehearsing regularly. There’s singing, acting, dancing and the whole lot. We have to put on the southern US accent and really get into character.

“I’m really enjoying a self-defence course, but it’s more about showing us how to use our common sense to get away from dangerous situations. Teenage boys and girls are both at risk to a certain degree, and can both be vulnerable when out at night. My cousin was walking home with two friends from a bar, and two people came down and jumped on him and beat him up.

“There’s more action with a golf course in Rathdowney. I’ve played once or twice before; it’s nice to get out of class and we’ve had good craic on the course. A friend and I have used TY to start a sports partnership. We’re helping to teach under-six and under-ten soccer teams every Saturday morning for the next few weeks.

“Next up is a work experience placement in RTÉ. There’s fierce competition for those places and our school was picked out of a hat. I’m looking forward to seeing what life is like in the national broadcaster.”
