Following a two-year mating game, a match has been arranged between the University of Limerick and Carrickon-Shannon Education Centre. The two institutions have formed a partnership to offer a two-year guidance-counselling diploma to teachers in the midlands and the northwest. The course will start on Friday, February 20th, with classes on Friday evenings and Saturdays. Applicants have already been short-listed for the course and they will be interviewed this Saturday.
Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centre is currently situated in the Marist Primary School, but a new "campus" is currently under construction and will be ready in the autumn. The centre is in contact with up to 50 post-primary schools and almost 200 primary schools in a number of surrounding counties.
An announcement about the course was made last week at the launch of a book, Painting Pictures with Words, which features original poems by 96 children from 28 primary schools in counties Longford, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, Sligo and Mayo. The book was compiled by Chris Thompson, who conducts poetry workshops in the area. It's available for £5 (no postage charge) from the centre on Dublin Road, Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim (tel/fax: (078) 20383).
