PETER PAN is likely to become a regular visitor to schools in Munster as art of a new project by USI's southern member colleges.
The Peter Pan Project sees third level volunteers pay regular visit second level schools to encourage students who would not usually continue their education to third level to consider doing so.
The project has worked well in the five pilot schools in Tralee and Cork which have so far participated, says USI's southern area convenor, Ian Lucey. "It's a good idea having students talking to other students. As one parents' council member put it, it's peer support rather than peer pressure.
It is hoped to extend the project to up to 60 schools in Munster next September, including schools in Limerick, Waterford and Carlow, with study groups and "buddy systems" on offer to schools. While some county councils have indicated their support, the project is also seeking commercial sponsorship.
