TRANSITION Year teachers searching for suitable classroom material may be interested in the "Why Care?" pack, produced by Alone. It is designed to heighten students' awareness of some of the problems faced by older people living alone in the community and to encourage students to visit an older person in their community. It also examines the issue of growing old.

The suggested time allocation for the module is 10 class periods: A video, narrated by Dave Fanning, brings real-life situations into the classroom. The work pack contains teacher notes and step-by-step suggestions for classroom sessions, background information on topics related to older people and suggestions for student-centred activities.

There are worksheet masters and overhead projector masters which may be photocopied, as well as case study material. The pack includes a certificate of merit which can be photocopied and presented to students who have completed the programme and who have visited an older person who is alone.
