UL STUDENTS' union has taken an enlightened view of alcohol as part of its Alcohol Awareness Week, which starts today and runs until Thursday.
The university's Alcohol Appreciation Society, which one might have though would take a dim view of proceedings, have taken the opportunity to offer samples of wine and whiskey in an effort to emphasise quality over quantity.
The week's activities will include promotional stands offering samples of low alcohol and alcohol free beers; soft drinks companies will also be on hand. A pub quiz with some alcohol related questions will take place on Tuesday and the bar will serve alcohol free drinks and cocktails.
On Wednesday, family campaigner Nora Bennis and the chairman of the Mid Western Health Board will debate "Ireland's Drink Culture" and on Thursday the week will conclude with an Alcohol Awareness Gig, attended by laconic storyteller Kevin McAleer.
"Our aim is not to criticise nor to oppose all alcohol consumption, but to offer friendly advice about the problems caused by misuse of alcohol," a union spokeswoman said.
