Flights to and from Edinburgh Airport were halted this morning after over 6cm of snow fell last night.

Operator BAA warned passengers to expect some delays as services resumed after the snow was cleared.

A total of 20 departures and 16 arrivals were cancelled this morning, with two flights diverted to alternative airports.

A spokesman for BAA said the airport was expected to stay open for the rest of the day, and it was anticipated it would catch up with delays, despite further snow showers forecast to sweep the central belt later today.

Glasgow and Aberdeen Airports both remained open.

Britain's Met Office has issued severe weather warnings of heavy snow for several regions across Scotland, including Grampian, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside and Fife, plus southwest Scotland, Lothian and Borders.

Several of Scotland’s police forces have warned drivers to be cautious after last night’s snow showers and sub-zero temperatures left some roads in hazardous conditions.

With low overnight temperatures and some snowfall, there is a risk of black ice over untreated roads.

Meanwhile, England and Wales experienced a comparatively mild night last night, with temperatures remaining firmly above freezing but with high winds and rain hitting some regions.

In Northern Ireland, drivers woke up to icy conditions following sub-zero temperatures and some snow on higher ground.
