Keiron Dyer is to seek reassurances over Newcastle's plans for the future before signing a new contract at St James' Park.

The 22-year-old, who was recently linked with a £20million sterling move to Manchester United, is in discussions over an improved new deal but he is keen to see who manager Bobby Robson brings in over the summer before signing.

"Newcastle have been linked with a lot of big names and we need four or five top-quality signings if we are going to challenge for Europe," Dyer told The Sun.

"If they don't come up with them then I'll have to meet the manager and the chairman to see what is going on. I am a very ambitious person and I want to win things in my career.

"If I can achieve my ambitions with Newcastle then I'll be delighted to stay. But I know there has been a lot of talk about Manchester United and Leeds in the papers.

"The club have offered me an improved new contract but first I want to see what happens here during the summer and what sort of team Newcastle will have next season.

"Newcastle are a massive club and we should be buying the top players and starting to fulfill our potential.

"They are a great club with a wonderful fan base. I just hope they show the ambition that I crave and the supporters want as well." PA
