A DUNDALK lorry driver accused of smuggling 1.3 million cigarettes into Northern Ireland was remanded in custody yesterday for the second time in three days.
Mr Kenneth Peter Murphy (30), of Greenfield Court, had been remanded in custody at Belfast Magistrates Court last Saturday to be released yesterday on condition £10,000 was lodged in court. A non cash surety of £40,000 was also imposed.
Mr Sean McCann, defending, told yesterday's sitting that Customs and Excise had agreed to the cash lodgement being halved to £5,000. But because of a bank holiday in the Republic, the money would not be available until today. Mr Murphy was remanded in custody for a week but Magistrate John Fyffe said he could be released as soon as the £5,000 was lodged in court.
