A DUBLIN man charged with the stabbing of Kristian Shortt in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, last Thursday has been remanded in custody following a court appearance in Co Cavan.
Kenneth Broe (36), who gave an address at Alderwood Green, Springfield, Tallaght, was before Judge Seán Mac Bride at Ballyconnell/Swanlinbar District Court yesterday charged with the assault of Mr Shortt at Flat 2, 53 Upper Main Street, Letterkenny, on October 9th, causing him harm, contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against The Person Act.
Broe, a single father of two, was also charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of sale or supply and with possession of cocaine for his own use at Monaghan Garda station, contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act. "I am absolutely refusing bail in this case," ruled Judge Mac Bride.
Mr Broe was remanded to Castlerea prison, Co Roscommon to appear at Harristown District Court this Friday, October 17th.
Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Det Sgt Michael Carroll of Letterkenny gardaí. The court heard that when asked whether he had any reply when charged, Broe replied "Nothing." In evidence, Mr Broe later told the court he intended to plead not guilty to the charges.
Paul Madden, defending solicitor, sought bail for his client. Garda Insp Brendan Cadden, Cavan town, objected and successfully sought the remand in custody of the defendant.
