A man appeared in court today charged with murdering a pensioner and seriously injuring his elderly brother in an attack at a remote farmhouse.

Mr John Doyle, 34, from Dublin, was charged with the murder of 81-year-old farmer Patrick Logan at his cottage in Castlejordan, Co Offaly.

He was also accused of assaulting Mr Logan's brother Peter, who was 82 at the time of the attack in June 2000.

He was remanded in custody by Judge John Neilan at Tullamore District Court and will appear at Granard District Court on Friday.

Patrick Logan died of a heart attack during the incident at the isolated farmhouse.

Another man, aged in his mid 20s, has already been charged with murder in connection with the incident. He is due in court for trial next February.
