There was a 10 per cent rise in the number of visitors to Dublin Zoo last year, according to its annual report published today.
The report shows that 772,322 visited the Phoenix Park facility in 2003
Commercial Director, Ms Helen Murphy, said the record results were achieved "despite an increased competition from new and existing attractions."
During the year, seven flamingo chicks were successfully raised to adulthood, while gorilla Lena gave birth to a male. A Brazilian tapir calf, a tiger cub, and a female chimpanzee were also born. The chimp, named Lucy, had to be hand-reared by Dublin Zoo staff.
In 2003, the zoo focused on improving visitor facilities with building work starting on two toilet blocks which include baby changing areas.
The zoo's educational services were enhanced during 2003 through with the addition of a range of activities including the Tiny Tots Safari.
