The meteorological service said rainfall in June and July was two-and-a-half  times the normal amount in many parts of Leinster and that in July rainfall amounts were more than three times the norm in parts of Dublin.

It was the wettest July for between 19 and 47 years in many places, Met Éireann said in its monthly statistics bulletin.

The total of 297 millimetres of rain recorded in Dublin's Phoenix Park in June and July was the highest for the two months since records started 170 years ago.

At least 1mm of rain was measured on each day at one or more weather station in the between June 11th and July 29th- a total of 49 days. There were between 14 and 25 wet days (days with 1mm or more rainfall) recorded compared with the normal range for July of between nine and 14.

Mullingar, Co Westmeath was the wettest location in July, recording a total of 154mm of rain in the month. This is the highest total in the month of July since 1960. The driest area was Rosslare, Co Wexford where only 74mm of rain fell last month.

The highest daily rainfall recorded last month was in Kilkenny on July 13th, when 23.9mm of rain fell in 24 hours. This is the wettest July day since 1988, Met Éireann said.

But the despite the "exceptional" levels of rain, sunshine totals were above normal everywhere and it was a very sunny month in coastal counties of the west and north.

Donegal's Malin Head's recorded a total of 212 hours of sunsine, the highest for July since 1955. The sunniest weather of the month was during the last three days. The highest monthly sunshine total was in Rosslare, which enjoyed 224 hours of sun in July.

Birr Co Offally saw only 142 hours over the same period and was the least sunny location in the State. The highest daily total was in Malin Head on July 15th when the sun shone for 15.3 hours.

Mean air temperatures overall were near or a little below normal generally, with daily maxima only very rarely rising above 20° Celsius.

The highest mean monthly temperature (15.2°C) was in Shannon airport, while the lowest monthly average was in Knock Airport (13.4°C). The highest temperature of the month was 21.5°C, recorded in Kilkenny on July 12th and in Shannon on July 15th. The lowest air temperature was 5.4°C in Mullingar on July 8th, while the lowest grass temperature was -0.1°C in Kilkenny on July 7th.

Tornadoes, or related phenomena such as funnel clouds and waterspouts, were also observed from a number of locations on four days in the past two months.
