A DUBLIN man charged in connection with the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin appeared in Kilmainham District Court yesterday.

Mr Paul Ward (32) of Windmill Park, Crumlin, had been charged by Det Insp Jeremiah O'Connell with conspiracy, with persons not yet charged, to murder Ms Guerin on June 26th, 1996. Mr Ward is also charged with harbouring and assisting persons at Walkinstown Road, Dublin, on or about June 26th last, knowing they had murdered Ms Guerin.

He is also charged with possession of and possession with intent to supply cannabis resin at Old Court Road, Tallaght on October 17th, 1996. Insp Thomas O'Loughlin said he was applying for a further remand.

Mr Terence Hanahoe, solicitor, for Mr Ward, said he would consent to a remand of one week on all charges. He added that Mr Ward wanted to apply for legal aid.

Insp O'Loughlin told Judge Gillian Hussey the Tallaght charges would remain in Kilmainham Court. She remanded Mr Ward in custody to October 31st.
