Gardaí in north Co Dublin are questioning a man today after he threatened officers with a handgun early this morning.
The officers were reacting to a report that a man in his 40s was smashing the windows of the newly-opened Lidl supermarket in Balbriggan. When they approached him he pointed the gun at them and threatened them.
He also threatened passers-by, a Garda spokeswoman said. Gardai managed to disarm the man and arrested him. He is being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Nobody was injured in the incident and no shots were fired.
