Dublin Corporation has approved the reduction of speed limits on city centre roads from 50kph to 30kph.

The measure, which is designed to make the roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians, was approved by a large majority of councillors at a meeting last night.

Following a change to laws governing the designation of speed limits on national roads, the council has now agreed to reduce the speed on national roads in the city centre which include O’Connell Street, the quays, and from D’Olier Street to Christchurch.

The measures, which come into force on March 31st, 2010, will be subject to a six-month review.
