An addict has been jailed for five years for selling heroin on O'Connell Street, Dublin.

Keith Staunton (32), unemployed, of North Circular Road, Dublin, was arrested on July 8th last after five gardai from the North Central Drug Unit searched his home as part of "Operation Main Street", aimed at heroin dealers. Det Garda Angela Willis told Mr George Birmingham, prosecuting, that her team recovered 6.7g of heroin with a street value of £1,200 to £1,800. She said Staunton admitted he was "a heroin user partly for supply and to use for himself."

Staunton has 10 previous convictions including a four-year sentence for larceny two years ago, road traffic offences, burglary and assault.

Judge O'Donnell listed the case for review in two years' time and ordered Staunton to undertake rehabilitation programmes in prison. He said "this is especially serious as you were sentenced to four years' jail and committed this crime when only one year out."
