Weather warnings have been issued for the majority of the UK over the next few days so any intending passengers travelling to the UK should check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Belfast International Airport is currently open and operational however cancellations and delays should be expected due to severe weather conditions. City of Derry Airport was closed until 1pm today and is experiencing knock-on cancellations and delays. Donegal airport was also closed.

Aer Lingus is experiencing some disruption to its services due to severe weather conditions in continental Europe. Again, intending passengers are asked to contact their airline before going to the airport.

In Limerick the N21, Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West roads are very slippery.

Maryborough Hill near Douglas in Cork is impassable, as is St Luke's Cross, Wallaces Avenue and Cathedral Road. Extra care is needed on Main Street in Milltown and on the N20 between Croom and Mallow. Moll’s Gap road in Kerry should be avoided and the Conor Pass remains closed.

The Boyle/Frenchpark road (R361) in Co Roscommon is extremely dangerous and motorists are being asked to avoid Connaughton road and Gallows Hill in Sligo Town for the same reason.

Coniditons are poor in Connemara particularly on Camus road and the Leenane/Maam Cross road (R336). It is also treacherous on Ballinasloe/Portumna Rd (R355).

Very icy on the N2 approaching Castleblayney and gardai are advising against any unnecessary journeys in Donegal where conditions are particularly treacherous.

Treacherous conditions reported on the N2/Dublin/Monaghan road between Collon and Ardee and it is very icy on the N81 Blessington/Tallaght road. Elsewhere, Kilgarron Hill in Enniskerry should be avoided. Gardai are asking people to avoid The Wicklow and Sally Gaps

In Dublin, gardai have closed the Tallaght/Brittas road (R114) at Ballinascorney Hill and at Aghfarrell Hill due to icy conditions. It’s also icy on the back roads around Brittas.

Ferries and trains are running as normal as is Dublin Bus. A number of Bus Eireann services have been affected by the weather. There are no services operating in Kerry. Services in Clare are currently under review.

Bus Eireann spokesman Andrew McAlinden said parts of north Cork city had also seen service disruptions.

Services from the north west to Northern Ireland were also badly affected and there were some cancellations in Clare.

“We are conscious that it is a busy weekend and a very busy week ahead for people. We will endeavour to maintain as many services as possible during the week to get people to the shops, to get people home so they can visit family and friends but it is dependent on road and weather conditions.”

Mr McAlinden said Bus Éireann staff had made "great efforts" during last cold snap to try to maintain about 95 per cent of services.

On Route 51, Cork/Limerick/Galway, no services are operating between Cork and Limerick. The 10.45 Dublin to Letterkenny service has been cancelled as has route 33 from Dublin to Derry, route 111 Cavan to Athboy and route 163 Drogheda/Donore.

Met Éireann said there would be widespread frost and ice early today, with remaining overnight pockets of freezing fog clearing gradually. There will be some good, dry, periods today with some sunny spells, but some sleet and snow showers at times too. Some showers may be heavy with the coastal areas of the west, north and east most at risk.

The Defence Forces are transporting healthcare workers and patients to and from medical facilities as well as assisting with snow clearance in the midlands, Donegal and Cork.
