A motorist attempted to leave the scene of an accident in which a six-year-old boy was left lying at the side of the road with a broken leg, a court heard yesterday. Judge Michael White approved a settlement offer by the motorist's insurance company of £11,750.

Mr Barney Quirke, for Ciaran Edwards, now eight, told the Dublin Circuit Court that Edward Benton, Bancroft Close, Tallaght, Dublin, had made no effort to offer assistance to the child.

Mr Quirke said Ciaran, of Allenton Drive, Bohernabreena, Dublin, had been playing on the foot path near his home when Benton's car mounted the pavement and struck him violently. He said the boy's right leg was broken and deformed after the collision.

"The driver of the car attempted to leave the scene and made no effort to offer any assistance to the plaintiff," Mr Quirke said. "Shortly afterwards he returned and spoke to the boy's father but left the scene before the guards arrived."
