A man driving a waste disposal truck who was arrested at the gates of Mountjoy jail in possession of a loaded gun was charged and released after questioning last night.
The 32-year-old was questioned at Mountjoy Garda Station yesterday under the Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and charged shortly after 7.30pm. He is due before the Dublin District Court on December 7th.
The driver was carrying a pistol in a leather holster and had two magazines of ammunition when he attempted to collect waste yesterday morning from St Patrick’s institution - a young offenders centre in the grounds of the prison.
The weapon was confiscated by prison guards at the gate who alerted gardaí.
It is understood the Romanian national was working for a sub contractor hired by waste company Greyhound Recycling to pick up skips in Dublin.
In a statement yesterday Greyhound Recycling said it was cooperating fully with the investigation launched by An Garda Siochana.
