At least 52 people have been killed in religious rioting sparked by three suicide bombings of churches in Nigeria yesterday, hospital staff said today.
Over 70 injured people are being treated at two hospitals in the northern city of Kaduna, near where the rioting took place.
The radical Islamist sect Boka Haram has claimed responsibility for the attacks yesterday in which at least 21 people were killed.
It is the third weekend in a row that Boko Haram has attacked churches across Nigeria. It claimed responsibility for attacks in the first and second weekends of this month that killed at least 21 people.
Yesterday’s attacks hit the city of Zaria and the nearby city of Kaduna in a religious flashpoint state.
Churches have been increasingly targeted by violence in Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people almost equally divided between Muslims and Christians.
Boko Haram has been blamed for more than 580 deaths this year alone.
