Donegal woman wins top Oireachtas festival award

MS Gearoidin Bhreathnach, An tArd Mhin, Croithli, Co Donegal, was the winner of the main sean nos singing award at the annual Oireachtas festival on Saturday. Ms Breathnach also won the sean nos singing competition for women.

Second place in the main competition went to Mr Meaiti Joe Sheamais O Fatharta, Na hAille, Indreabhan, Co Galway; followed in third place by Ms Treasa Ni Cheannabhin, Bearna, Co Galway.

Hundreds of Irish speakers attended the 10 day arts and singing festival, which was held this year in the Donegal Gaeltacht. Ms Breathnach received a gold medal and Corn Ui Riada, a trophy in memory of Sean O Riada, as well as a cheque for £500 presented by Raidio na Gaeltachta. The competition was broadcast live on the radio station.

First place in the men's sean nos singing competition went to Mr Risteard O hEidhin, Cill Chiarin, Co Galway. In the "agallamh beirte" or two handed dialogue, first place went to Mr Ray Mac Mnais, Cill Dheaglain, Co Meath, and Mr Antaine O Farachin, Cill Maighneann, Dublin. In the "luibini" (satirical rhymes) section first place went to Mr Sean O Grainne and Mr Traolach O Conghaile, Na Forbacha, Co Galway.
