Gardaí in Donegal have paid tribute to young drivers who displayed their driving skills off the public roads. More than 200 fans of "boy-racing" turned up at the event in a large yard at Ballybofey yesterday to watch drivers in their teens and early 20s.
Gardaí monitored the event after organisers claimed they were not being given due credit for moving the pastime off the roads and into a safe environment.
Sgt Iggy Larkin, head of the traffic division in south Donegal, said he was impressed by the skills of the young drivers. He said such organised events gave gardaí the chance to address "boy-racers" and their followers about their responsibilities on the road. Two-thirds of road victims are under 25. In Co Donegal last year, 22 young people were killed on the roads, the highest per capita figure in the State.
