A Co Donegal firm that makes protective clothing said yesterday it was cutting 50 jobs because of increased competition.

The Sioen company said it was cutting 50 of the 85 jobs at its plant in Gweedore.

The company, which has had a base in the town since 1980, blamed increased competition in the clothing manufacturing sector for the down-sizing.

The announcement came as statistics from NCB brokers yesterday showed that the Irish manufacturing sector had shrunk in October, the first time in nine months.
