There was a 10 per cent increase in the number of domestic holidays taken in the second quarter of this year compared to the same quarter last year according to figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) today.
The number of business trips also grew by 19.9 per cent over the same period however there was a decline in the number bednights spent in guest houses or B&B's on domestic trips. Down 9.4 per cent over the same period.
There was also a drop in the number of nights spent in self catering and rented houses, down 16 per cent.
The estimated expenditure spent on domestic holidays rose by 16.9 per cent from €200.6 million to €234.6 million
The figures also reveal an increase in the number of international trips with a least one overnight stay, up 7.1 per cent on last year, however, the average length of stay on trips abroad fell from 9.3 nights to 8.9 nights.
Overall estimated expenditure on international trips fell by 2.7 per cent.
